public works
residency at the Bagfactory in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Bag Factory is a long established studio and exhibition space in
Fordsburg, and at the same time part of the international artist network
Triangle Arts Trust. Fifteen years into the life of the Bag Factory
Make:Shift looks into the relationship between the architecture of the
building, its everyday use and social qualities, and the relevance of
the associated local and international networks.
make : shift is a participatory process in order to develop and articulate
a brief for future changes to the Bag Factory. Make : Shift will result
in the implementation of subsequent proposals, either architectural
or programmatic ones.
During August 2005 an open office was set up in the entrance area of
the Bag Factory, where ideas for future changes to the building and
the supporting arguments were collected and discussed with the users
and visitors to the building.
